Breast Augmentation Surgery
What is a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a common cosmetic procedure that is used to increase the fullness and projection of a woman’s breasts through implants thereby improving the balance in a women’s figure, and enhancing her self-image and self-confidence.
Breast augmentation is used to:
- Enlarge a naturally small breast
- Restore lost breast volume due to pregnancy or weight loss
- Achieve better symmetry if breasts are disproportionate in size or
shape
While breast augmentation will increase the fullness of breasts, it does
not correct sagging breasts. If a women wishes to improve the position
or shape of her breasts, a breast lift can be performed in conjunction
with a breast augmentation.
How is the procedure done?
Breast augmentation is performed using implants made of medical grade,
biocompatible, textured or smooth silicone shells filled with a sterile
saline solution. The saline poses no health hazard and can be safely absorbed
by the body if there is a leak or rupture.
The breast implants are filled at the time of the surgery through a self-sealing
valve. You and your surgeon will determine the best implant type, size,
and placement for your body type.
To perform the breast augmentation, the surgeon and patient can choose
from several incisions, which are based on implant type and size, and
a patient’s anatomy. Several common incision placements are near
the crease under the breast, in the underarm area, and near the edge of
the areola. Through the incisions, a pocket is created either behind the
breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle where the implant is placed.
The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible.

Where do I begin?
If you are interested in breast augmentation, we encourage you to think
about your reasons for having the procedure done. Breast augmentation
is a highly individualized procedure that should be done to fulfill your
own wishes, not the wishes of others. Additionally, you are more likely
to be satisfied with the results if you are motivated by your own personal
desire.
Good candidates for this procedure are women who have a positive outlook
and specific goals in mind for improving their body image, and are also:
- Non-smokers
- Healthy individuals with no life-threatening illnesses or conditions
that can impair healing
- Your desire to have a breast augmentation will begin with a physician
consultation, during which he will fully educate you about the procedure
and discuss your desires and goals.
