Laser Skin Resurfacing
What is laser skin resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing, also called a laser peel, is a procedure that is
used to create smoother, more even-toned skin, correct areas of uneven pigmentation,
and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Men and women of any age can benefit from this procedure. Laser skin resurfacing
can correct a variety of conditions, including:
- Fine lines (especially around the eyes)
- Acne scars
- Vertical lines around the mouth
- Facial scars
- Uneven pigmentation/age spots
- Sun damaged skin
How is the procedure done?
Laser skin resurfacing is performed by focusing a beam of laser energy
on the damaged skin, which vaporizes the upper layers of skin. The activated
laser is passed back and forth over the skin with careful precision until
the surgeon reaches the safest level that will make the wrinkle or scar
less visible. If the skin imperfections are deep, your doctor may recommend
performing the procedure in two or more stages.
As the skin heals, new cells form, creating a smoother and tighter looking
skin surface.
Where do I begin?
The laser skin resurfacing process will begin with a physician consultation,
during which one of our surgeons will fully educate you about the procedure. Typically,
men and women of all ages are candidates for laser skin resurfacing. You
may want to discuss other resurfacing options with your doctor if you:
- Have skin that is olive, brown or black
- Have taken Accutane during the past 18 months
- Are prone to abnormal scarring
- Have an active skin infection
